Tuner Series Pulley "Underdrive" for Impreza WRX
2002. Unorthodox Racing pulleys can provide gains of 5 to 12 HP and 4 to 8
ft.-lbs. on normally aspirated engines and 8 to 16 HP and 8 to 18 ft.-lbs. on forced
induction engines. These are average gains. Gains as high as 37 HP and 45 ft.-lbs. have
been realized on modified forced induction engines (see third dyno). These gains are
obtained in two ways. First, and most important, is the weight loss. An average of 2.7 HP is gained from every pound lost off the crank shaft. 85% of our gains are from
weight loss.
The rest of the gains
are from underdriving, which accounts for about
15% of the total
gains.
They do not push underdriving for two main reasons. Their main reason is to keep charging
systems, air conditioning, power steering, and water pumps moving fast enough for every
day driving. Second, not much horsepower is gained from extreme underdriving. All of their
underdriving is done with the crank pulley, not the accessory pulleys. This is done so
maximum weight loss can be achieved at the crank where most of the horsepower gains are
found. |

their factory steel counterparts. This lower weight yields a large reduction in the
rotating inertia of the belt train, allowing the engine to accelerate faster. The effect
is similar to fitting a lightened flywheel and is particularly noticeable in the lower RPM
range before the turbo spools up. This is because the power required to accelerate a heavy
pulley accounts for a much greater proportion of the available power at low RPM.
Additional power increases also come from a slight change in the ratios to reduce the
driven load of the power-robbing peripheral components (particularly at high RPM), without

that will give you the extra edge you need! How do they do this?
GFB's pulleys are manufactured on the latest Multi-Axis CNC machines from
the highest grade 6061-T6 aluminum billet, making them immensely lighter
than their factory steel counterparts. This lower weight yields a large
reduction in the rotating inertia of the belt train, allowing the engine to
accelerate faster. The effect is similar to fitting a lightened flywheel and
is particularly noticeable in the lower RPM range.
This is because the power required to accelerate a heavy pulley accounts for
a much greater proportion of the available power at low RPM. Additional
power increases also come from a slight change in the ratios to reduce the
driven load of the power-robbing peripheral components (particularly at high
RPM), without affecting their performance.

and 10 to 20 ft. .lbs of
torque. Higher gains can be realized on vehicles that are modified. First, and most important, is the weight
loss. There is an average of 2.7 HP gained from every pound lost off the
crank shaft. With the lighter accessory pulleys, as much as 15% to 30% more
power can be found. 85% of their gains are from
weight loss.
